The Bubble collection has arrived at Dantone Home. David Girelli built it on irregular tufting, tied by hand, so that the upholstery folds instead of sitting flat, and the same surface reads differently from every angle in the room.

Two pieces, sofa and armchair, sharing one construction
Three tones, saturated enough to register from across a room, muted enough to live with

There are two pieces, a three-seater sofa and an armless armchair, and three colours: amber, maroon, and moss

    Made to Be Sunk Into

The armchair is 96 cm deep and has no arms. The sofa is 92.5 cm deep, with a back that stops at 70 cm. Both proportions point the same way: seating for legs up and long evenings.

The back sits at an angle, which is what lets the body sink rather than perch.

That behaviour comes from the construction. Beneath the upholstery, a hand-tied system holds the volume of each tuft separately, which is why the surface gives under weight instead of resisting it, then recovers its folds once the room is empty again.

Rather than tufting the piece in regular squares, I rethought the process by creating completely irregular tufts. This creates a sort of abstract design and movement within the piece while keeping its physical comfort and softness. It's about giving a functional, otherwise inert shape a soul.
    David Girelli

Girelli connects the direction to how people want to live now: a 'cocooning' feeling that still works inside a modern floor plan. A room with Bubble in it gains somewhere to disappear for an hour.

The seams run irregularly, so light collects along them at different depths

    Colour on a Folded Surface

Tufting changes what a colour does. The ridges and hollows across the surface catch light at different angles, so a single upholstery reads as several tones at once. Amber runs from honey on the raised folds to bronze where the fabric turns. Moss holds its olive in daylight and goes considerably darker in the seams. Maroon gains the most from the technique: on a flat panel it would sit as one block, and here it separates into layers.

Moss recedes, maroon anchors, amber pulls the eye first

All three are saturated. In a room of pale walls and oak, the collection sets the tone rather than following it, which makes placement a decision rather than a default. One piece is usually enough.

Both pieces can be seen, sat in, and bought at the Dantone Home showrooms, and are not yet available online
